The Town of Buena Vista

Buena Vista, Colorado, is an awesome (some would say charming) mountain town situated in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Established in the mid-1800s, the town was once a hub for gold and silver mining but has since transformed into a renowned outdoor recreation destination. Known for its stunning vistas, Buena Vista offers many outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, white-water rafting, horseback riding, and fishing.

Buena Vista is relatively close to major cities such as Denver and Colorado Springs, making it an easy escape for locals as well as an accessible tourist destination. Its popular attractions include the Arkansas River, Browns Canyon National Monument, Collegiate Peaks, and Cottonwood Pass making it an ideal base for exploring the surrounding natural landscapes. Buena Vista is truly a playground for those who love the outdoors.

Camping in the San Isabel National Forests

Located near Buena Vista, Colorado, the Salida Ranger District of the San Isabel National Forest is a popular destination for outdoor recreation and camping enthusiasts. The district offers a wide range of camping facilities, including scenic campsites located along the Arkansas River, numerous dispersed camping opportunities, and several developed campgrounds.

These campgrounds offer plenty of activities for visitors such as hiking, fishing, mountain biking, OHV trails, and several scenic drives to explore. The Salida Ranger District provides an array of camping experiences for every level of explorer. Here are a few campgrounds located close by Buena Vista and the nearby Arkansas River.

Cottonwood Lake Campground

Cottonwood Lake Campground is located in the scenic San Isabel National Forest and is the perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts looking for a peaceful getaway. The campground is only 9 miles southwest of Buena Vista, Colorado, making it a convenient location for visitors looking to explore nearby attractions. Reservations for Cottonwood Lake Campground can be made up to six months in advance.

The fee for a standard tent pads is $24 per night for two cars and up to 8 people. A third car costs an extra $8. There are no specific areas for an RV campsite but they can use the tent sites as long as they are under 50'. These sites are equipped with a picnic table, a fire ring, potable water (for the whole campground) hand pump, a dumpster, and a vault toilet.

Campers can enjoy hiking, fishing, kayaking on the lake, and wildlife watching while staying at this beautiful campground. This campground just happens to be our favorite, BUT, In July, the Cottonwood it is named after makes it look like it's snowing.

Collegiate Peaks Campground

Located at the base of the Collegiate Peaks, this campground is a great place to explore the stunning beauty of the San Isabel National Forest. The campground is just eight miles away from Buena Vista, Colorado, making it a convenient location for RV and tent camping enthusiasts. Reservations for Collegiate Peaks Campground can be made up to six months in advance.

These camping options are a great way to experience the natural beauty of the forest in a more remote setting. However, campers should be aware of the rules and regulations, like Leave No Trace, governing dispersed camping and should take care to minimize their impact on the environment.

Collegiate Peaks Wilderness Area

The Collegiate Peaks Wilderness Area is a popular destination located near Buena Vista, Colorado. Spanning over 167,000 acres, The Collegiate Peaks wilderness area boasts some of the most stunning mountain views with fourteeners surrounded peaks gorgeously spread across the area. With several primitive campsites available in the area, it is an excellent destination for camping enthusiasts.

The area is also home to many hiking trails that lead to popular destinations such as Mount Belford, Mount Harvard, and Mount Columbia. Fishing is another popular activity with several creeks and rivers running through the wilderness area. It is important to note that camping in the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness Area requires a permit, and fees may apply. However, these fees are typically minimal and well worth the breathtaking natural beauty that the wilderness area has to offer.

Chaffee County Lands

Camping on Chaffee County public lands near Buena Vista Co, is a great way to explore the natural beauty of this area and is managed primarily by the US Forest Service. The area boasts several primitive camping options, so visitors seeking a more remote setting will find suitable options here. The area also has several trails that are great for mountain biking and OHV use. While camping on Chaffee County Lands is often free or requires minimal fees, some sites require permits or reservations.

Arkansas River Rim Campground

Located in the heart of the San Isabel National Forest, this campground offers guests some of the best views around. Situated alongside the Arkansas River, visitors can enjoy fishing and rafting right off the banks of the river. The campground does not have a camp store on the premises, but the nearby town of Buena Vista is just a short drive away. Tent camping sites come with a fire pit and picnic table, and RV campers have access to water, electric, and sewage hookups. Reservations can be made up to six months in advance.

Turtle Rock Campground

Nestled in the Chalk Creek Valley, Turtle Rock Campground is perfect for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The campground is approximately 15 minutes away from Buena Vista and does not have a store onsite. Tent camping sites offer fire rings and picnic tables, and RV campsites have access to water and electric. The campground is known for its stunning views of the Collegiate Peaks.

Middle Cottonwood Creek

This quiet campground is located just 7 miles from Buena Vista, making it a great option for those who want to be close to town. There is no store on the premises, so make sure to bring your supplies with you. Tent camping sites come with fire pits and picnic tables, and RV campsites offer water and electric hookups. The campground is surrounded by towering aspen trees, providing guests with a serene atmosphere.

Ruby Mountain Campground

Situated near the base of Ruby Mountain, the campground is located off a forest service road, providing visitors with a secluded and peaceful experience. The campground is located in the Collegiate Peaks area, offering visitors stunning views of the surrounding mountain peaks. Ruby Mountain Campground offers traditional campground amenities such as picnic tables, fire rings, and vault toilets.

Water is not available, so visitors should come prepared. The campground has many campsites, and most of them first come, first served. The campground also features a picnic area which is popular for day use. The nearby trailheads offer an array of outdoor activities, including hiking and mountain biking, as well as some great fishing spots.

Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area

This area is truly a gem, offering visitors access to over 150 miles of fishing, kayaking, and rafting on the Arkansas River. The area is conveniently located just a few minutes away from Buena Vista and has a small store on the premises. Tent camping sites come equipped with fire rings and picnic tables, and RV campers have access to water and electric hookups. Reservations can be made up to six months in advance. Princeton RV Park

This RV-only campground is located just a stone's throw away from Mt. Princeton, one of the San Isabel National Forest's tallest peaks. The campground features full hookups, making it easy for RVers to stay comfortable during their visit. There is a small store on the premises, and the town of Buena Vista is just 10 minutes away. Reservations can be made up to six months in advance.

Arrowhead Point Camping Resort

This resort-style campground offers guests an array of amenities, including a clubhouse, hot tubs, and a fitness center. The campground is located just outside of Buena Vista and has a small store on the premises. Tent camping sites come with fire pits and picnic tables, and RV campsites offer full hookups. Reservations can be made up to a year in advance.

Chalk Creek Campgrounds & Rv Park

The campgrounds offer ample amenities for visitors, such as hot springs, a playground, horseshoes and volleyball courts, a general store, and laundry facilities. The location is ideal for accessing several recreational opportunities in the area, including hiking and biking trails, fishing spots, and breathtaking scenic driving routes to enjoy. The area is known for its ample natural beauty and diverse outdoor recreation, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers or those who seek adventure amidst nature.

Buena Vista KOA Journey

This family-friendly campground is located just minutes away from the charming town of Buena Vista. The campground offers an array of activities for kids and adults alike, including a playground and horseshoe pits. There is a small store on the premises, making it easy to stock up on supplies. Tent camping sites come with fire rings and picnic tables, and RV campsites offer full hookups, a dump station along with other amenities. Reservations can be made up to a year in advance. TripAdvisor rating for this campground is a healthy 4.5 of 5.

Closer to Salida, Co

If you want to stay closer to Salida and a few more amenities and options a town brings, then Shavano Camground may be a great option.  Not far from the nearby Shavano Mountain, the Angel of Shavano Campground is also an option. For larger parties, the Angel of Shavano group campground is available as well. The North Fork Campground is also close to Salida as another nearby family campground. Remember, these are only some examples of the many camping secrets of the south Arkansas river giving access to so many activities and the Colorado Trail. If you are looking for Buena Vista Farms, well, that is in Illinois.
